Travelling with dogs and the law

Dogs should always be suitable restrained in cars not only for their safety but also for yours. Rule 57 of the Highway Code states that you can now get a fine of up to £2500 and 9 Points for having an animal loose in the car!

As a nation of dog lovers they often accompany us here there and everywhere, so what are safe and legal ways to travel with your pooch?

First of all they should not be in a place where they can distract you so avoid putting them on the front seat.

~ A harness that attaches to a seat belt plug is a great option to keep them secure but please make sure the harness is correctly fitted.

~ A pet carrier can be useful for smaller animals, secured by a seatbelt.

~ Some cars have built-in luggage guards and aftermarket ones that can be fitted. Please make sure to remove parcel shelves and ensure that the guard is robust enough under heavy breaking or in the event of an accident.

In addition always make sure pets keep hydrated in the car and never leave them unattended during hot weather.
