Saddles and their affect on movement

We are all aware that the fit of a saddle can impact the way the horse moves but do we really understand the physical implications of a poorly fitting saddle?

on extension of the forelimbs and reduce full range of motion often resulting in the hindlimbs reducing stride length. Abdominal muscles slacken and weaken and the back will hollow. The underside of the neck will become overdeveloped and toppling will weaken. The horse will lack in power pulling itself forward with the forelimbs.

A wide saddle: can cause pain and discomfort to the vertebral processes and load bearing onto the ribs. unsupported by the back muscles the saddle will cause hair loss and rub marks.

Saddle fit is very much like the old tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears!! You have to get it juuust right, as not only can they cause discomfort and affect function but they will also effect the riders balance and symmetry. With this all in mind it is paramount that saddles are regularly checked. Any problems can be addressed quickly to avoid any muscoskeletal impact.
